Mayor's Message
On behalf of my fellow councillors I am pleased to welcome you to our website. I hope that your travel plans include a visit to the town I have called home for over 40 years.
God has richly blessed our Town with an abundance of friendly, active, hard working residents, and many thriving volunteer organizations, that together make Eastport truly a place of opportunity. Small town hospitality blends with available core services to make Eastport a wonderful place to live.It represents the very best of small-town Canada.
Eastport is a rural jewel located an hour’s drive east of Gander and three hours west of St. John’s. Just take route 310 (Road to the Beaches) at the west entrance of Terra Nova National Park. Eastport, and the communities of Sandringham, Happy Adventure, Sandy Cove, Salvage, St Chad’s and Burnside make up the beautiful Eastport Peninsula.
The Eastport Peninsula has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, perfect for sunbathing and relaxing. Bring your children and let them play in the sand and maybe venture out into the crystal clear water of the Atlantic Ocean.
We have an abundance of places to stay, but you need to book early during our summer months. A number of festivals and events take place in Eastport regularly throughout the year. The Beaches Heritage Center offers entertainment throughout the year, such as the Winterset in Summer Literary Festival in August, the Accordion Festival in July, a Country and Western weekend during August and weekly entertainment ranging from kitchen parties, plays, and performances by the Eastpen Players - our local drama troupe which is second to none. Seafest is always held the weekend proceeding the first Monday in August. The Agriculture Exhibition is a 10-day event held every year in October with the grand finale on Thanksgiving weekend.
As a council we are committed to enhancing the elements that make Eastport a desirable place to live, to work and to visit.
The Town of Eastport is the sponsoring agency of the Eastport Peninsula Recreation and Wellness Committee. Two years ago the Eastport Peninsula was chosen by the province as one of four regions to receive a three-year recreation and wellness pilot-project grant, which enabled us to hire a professional recreation director to plan and implement age-friendly recreation and wellness opportunities. We are proud of the success of this program.
The Eastport Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department is a modern, well-trained and well-equipped fire department. We have a wonderful group of dedicated men and women who make certain that this peninsula is a safe place in which to live. The expenses of our fire department are shared with our neighbouring communities, Happy Adventure, Sandy Cove, Salvage, Sandringham, Burnside and St. Chad’s.The fire fighters themselves spend many volunteer hours in training to ensure they are well abreast of the latest fire fighting techniques. They also raise funds to purchase specialized and necessary equipment for the department.
Our greatest community asset is our people who live here and make this a wonderful town in which to live and an equally wonderful town to visit. We hope to see you soon.
